Police car in four-vehicle crash at major intersection

FOUR CARS collided in Mackay city yesterday morning after police flicked their lights on to indicate an interception.

Police began to follow the vehicle about 9.30am, which passed through the intersection of Sydney and Gordon St while the lights changed to red.

Lights and sirens were activated by two constables of the Mackay Police Station, before proceeding through "very slowly".

Senior Sergeant Mark Dwyer said it was difficult to ascertain the exact cause of the incident, however reduced visibility may have been a contributing factor.

"Unfortunately another car went outside of a truck and didn't see the police vehicle coming through," he said.

The cars collided, sending the emergency service vehicle into an intersection light pole.

The 16-year-old learner driver of the other vehicle and her 46-year-old father then collided with two other vehicles on the south bound lane of Sydney St, Sergeant Dwyer said.

The 16-year-old driver was taken Mackay Base Hospital with minor soft tissue injuries.
