Charges laid in cold case

POLICE have charged a 27-year-old Eastern Heights man over the rape and torture of a 58-year-old woman.

The offences are alleged to have occurred in Ipswich in June 1999, when the accused was only 16.

Officers from the Ipswich Criminal Investigation Branch, with the assistance of State Crime Operation Command’s Cold Case and Serial Sex Crime Team, conducted the investigation into the incident.

The man has been charged with 27 offences including rape, attempted rape, deprivation of liberty, torture, indecent assault, assault occasioning bodily harm, common assault, enter dwelling with intent at night with violence and robbery with violence.

He will appear in Ipswich Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
