Players hope to be keeping in Touch
TOUCH: Briffney Touch Fields is the place to be for hundreds of the best junior players in the region today from 8.30am.
With a spot in Central Queensland Bulls' Under-16 to U12 teams up for grabs, players from Gladstone, Rockhampton, Bundaberg and Emerald will be keen to impress at the 2017 CQ Touch Association Junior Championships.
Rockhampton-based CQ Touch administration officer Tracy Upton said there will be some big names playing and coaching.
"The CQ coaches are former Australian players Gavin Shuker, Mitchell Smith and current Aussie Open women's player Tamika Upton (Tracy's daughter),” Upton said.
"They have all given up their time and our kids are just so lucky.”
Current Australian U17 player Aaron Moore will also be suiting up for Rocky.
"Other players to look out for are Declan Sandilands and the U16 Gladstone girls have Lily Peachey,” Upton said.
"Emerald's Emma Paki are ones to look out for in the U14 girls as well as Abbie Sandilands.”
While the players in the U16 to U12 age groups will be doing their best to perform, Upton said the youngest age group players have plenty of incentive as well.
"Our U10 players will be trying to get into teams that will play in the Junior State Cup in July,” she said.
The biggest representations of players are in the U12s and Upton said it will be a challenge to select players in the CQ boys' and girls' teams.
"It will be very hard to select because of the calibre of players and the U12 have the most amount of teams,” Upton said.
Gladstone U16 boys coach Dennis Black said his young charges are well prepared.
"The boys have been training well making sure the basics and combinations are there, plus a few little surprises for the opposition to keep them on their toes. The fact the core of the team all play in the Div 1 men's comp has certainly assisted preparations,” Black said.
"I expect that Lachlan Black and Blake Vincent will take their good club form into the games and be well supported by Jet Cavanagh and Ethan List, all of which will be vying for CQ Bulls selection.”
