Plans underway to create community gardens
RESIDENTS have just under two week to register their interest in a community garden.
Gladstone Regional Council is seeking feedback from residents keen to help set up a community garden in their area.
Gladstone Mayor Sellers said the concept had created a good deal of discussion and responses on the council's Facebook page.
"The feedback is invaluable but I encourage residents to complete the form so we can review the submissions in an official process," Cr Sellers said.
She said there was a range of different models for the creation of successful community gardens, so council's first step was to find out the region's interest and ideas.
"I support the concept of community gardens as these outdoor environments are known to nurture connectedness, encourage outdoor learning and enable the sharing of skills," she said.
"Community gardens can benefit physical and nutritional health, mental health and wellbeing, environmental sustainability, food security, social inclusion, education and training, economic development, cultural vitality and community resilience."
Interested residents are invited to complete an expression of interest form and return it by August 14.
The form is available on the council's website, and hard copies can be collected from council's administration centres throughout the region.
