Plans for sand quarry revealed

A QUARRIED area along the Kolan River could soon be re-established, with Berajondo Earthmoving and Haulage seeking to extract sand and gravel as soon as possible to meet demand from local projects.

According to a material change of use application before Bundaberg Regional Council, up to 33330sq m of quarry material over five years would be removed from the Bucca site.

As of November 19, The Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy granted the business a Quarry Material Allocation Notice for that amount, current for five years.

The site was previously operated by Sergiacomi Sand and Gravel, and now Berajondo Earthmoving and Haulage has identified the site material is suitable to locally source and meet the needs of local council and state projects due to start in the area.

"The landfill site at Cedars Rd, Bundaberg requires a source of leachate rock to use in the cells which meets the design specifications," the application states.

"Presently rock is sourced from Hervey Bay and transported up the highway as there has been no suitable rock available locally.

"Transport expense as well as impacts to road infrastructure would be greatly reduced if a local source of suitable rock was available."

According to the application, material extraction would be restricted to currently exposed sand, with no explosives to be used.

Any extraction and processing activity would also be distant from Bucca Rd, to limit the likelihood of accidental public access.

"This is to minimise theft of material, as well as theft and/or vandalism of any other objects (eg plant and equipment) associated with the extractive industry," the application states.

Both the council and the State Government will assess the application.
