Pittsworth's sweet success set to soar into China

WHEN you're one of the biggest suppliers to the country's major retailers, there're few better places you can look to expand into than overseas.

That's why one of the Darling Downs' biggest success stories will be on TSBE's historic trade delegation tomorrow.

Pittsworth Confectionery is already trading with the world's largest online retailer, Alibaba, sourcing packaging for its lolly line made exclusively at the Mallard Rd factory.

Now, owner Ash Porter wants to see the trading relationship go the other way and meet what he hopes is a mass demand for his brand.

"We have the highest accreditation in Australia for what we manufacture and we supply all the major (supermarkets) throughout Australia," Mr Porter said.

"We've found with the red tape here, it's getting to expensive to do business here so whether it is over there too, we're not sure.

"That's what we want to investigate, and see what they consume and if there is a market for us."

Pittsworth locals, Mr Porter and his wife Michelle bought the company 10 years ago and the couple has ridden the changing domestic consumer trends in that time.

But the business truism of right place, right time also applies to China where the Porters will undertake crucial business matching sessions in the hope of securing a foothold in the in-demand market.

"Whether we're lucky enough to meet a buyer, I don't know," Mr Porter said.

"We're just hoping that we can squeeze in.

"There're 100 million affluent people over there, we only need a small hold."

If all goes to plan, Mr Porter said Pittsworth Confectionery had the capacity to meet instant product demand.
