Peugeot 508 sedan and touring bringing style back

PEUGEOT'S updated 508 sedan and touring range has arrived in Australian showrooms, bringing new styling, a new entry-level 1.6-litre petrol engine and increased standard specification.

The Australian large car market hasn't been kind to Peugeot's 508, with 2014 seeing just 358 sold for less than 1% market share in the segment. Ford's Falcon, Toyota's Aurion and overwhelmingly Holden's Commodore have dominated the sub-$70k large car market.

With the Falcon and Commodore on borrowed time and the Aurion's future unclear in Australia, the new 508 should at least be battling fewer opponents in coming years.

The cabin comes with a new touch-screen infotainment system, 8GB jukebox, sat nav and reversing camera as standard, while all new 508s feature steering wheel paddle shifters.

Under the 508 Active's bonnet is an all-new 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine giving 121kW and 240Nm, and mated to a six-speed auto it returns a claimed 5.8 litres/100km and spits out 134g/km emissions.

The flagship 508 GT models receive Peugeot's 150kW/450Nm 2.2-litre turbo diesel with the same economy figure and a 0-100kmh time of 8.2 seconds.

The entry-level 508 Active costs $1000 more than the model it supersedes at $37,990, but Peugeot says the new car has gained $4000 worth of additional standard specification equipment.

Wagons are only available with the diesel models and cost $3000 more than their sedan stablemates.

The 508 Allure diesel sedan costs $45,990 and the range-topping 508 GT is $58,490 in sedan guise, with all models available in Australian showrooms now.

The crossover SUV has failed to make much of a sales impact in Australia, but Peugeot says the new model with sharper pricing makes it better value than before.

Just one variant - the 3008 Active - is now offered, but with option packs available to add to its list of standard features.
Two drivetrains are available: a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol giving 115kW/240Nm, or a 2.0-litre turbo diesel good for 120kW/340Nm.

An optional Premium Pack ($3500) brings full leather heated seats, colour head-up display, panoramic glass roof and rear window sunblinds.

The 3008 Active costs $35,490 with the 1.6-litre petrol engine, and $38,990 for the 2.0-litre diesel, and are available now.
