Slipper says sorry to James Ashby

SIDELINED parliamentary Speaker Peter Slipper has apologised for the offensive text messages he sent to staffer James Ashby.

The Federal Court this week released more than 200 pages of text messages reportedly sent by Mr Slipper, in which he makes a number of vulgar remarks.

The messages were tendered as evidence in court last week as Mr Ashby continued with his attempt to sue Mr Slipper for sexual harassment.

In a brief statement issued late on Tuesday the Member for Fisher said "nothing excuses" the messages, particularly those that were derogatory towards women.

But he said the series of messages were private and only intended for he and Mr Ashby.

"Many of the messages occurred before I became Speaker and before Mr Ashby commenced work in my office," the statement read.

"I understand why people, particularly women, would be offended by these statements and I unreservedly apologise for them."
