Personal best times dominate Little Athletics Day

ATHLETICS: It is just the second round into the Little Athletics season, but already there have been a number of personal best times broken and new records set.

It is testimony to the program that Gladstone Little Athletics president John Sherriff runs.

Among the many young athletes who competed in various distances of sprints, long-jump, high-jump, discus, triple-jump, shot put and javelin was Jahden Silvester 8.

"I got personal times in everything except 100-metre and 200-metre runs,” Jahden said.

He is not short of any confidence either.

"I expected to get personal best times as well,” Jahden added.

The youngster only began Little Athletics last year and said it's a nice change from another sport.

"I used to play footy for Valleys and started Little Athletics because there is a lot of exercise,” Jahden said.

Mack Geiger, 12, was another with a personal best accomplishment.

"I got an official personal best by seven centimetres in the high-jump,” Mack said.

But it's not the only discipline he is good at.

"I like javelin, triple jump, high-jump and the 400-metre sprint, but will probably focus on javelin,” Mack said.

Younger sister Zeeta prefers the shortened version of running.

"My favourite is the 100-metre sprint and I'm also good at discus, the 70-metre sprint, shot put and javelin and my favourite is the discus,” Zeeta said.

Sherriff expects the season to really ramp up when school holidays arrive.

"It's still pretty early in the season and we do have a lot of new faces and lots of new talent,” Sherriff said.

"There were a few personal best times and what is pleasing is that there are a few older athletes participating as well.

"We have done a lot of work on the track this year and it's softer.”

Of the records broken on Saturday was Aleisha Paul who topped the under-13 discus distance on the day.

Maddi Sherriff broke the under-17 discus record in the opening Saturday of Little Athletics.

Meanwhile Sophie Duff, Tallis and Jason Stanhope will join Maddi in the North Queensland Athletics Championships to be held in Townsville this weekend.
