Perkins to lead the way for Qld at Youth Pathways Cup

SURF LIFESAVING: Maroochydore club member Jamie Perkins is poised to lead the charge for Queensland at the Youth Pathways Cup at Alexandra Headland on Friday.

The talented youngster is co-captain of the state under-14/15 team, alongside Gold Coast’s Cobey Frigo.

Queensland team manager Craig Law expected the squad to fare well against the other states, with Perkins among the ones to watch.

“Obviously in the under-15s, you’ve got Jamie, who went so well at The Aussies last year,” he said.

It was at North Burleigh she won the under-14 iron and board crowns and placed second in the surf race.

“And we’ve got Cobey, who is an outstanding board paddler … and Jacob Dickey is a young guy who last year didn’t make it into the Sunshine Coast team but is now one of the leading competitors in the Queensland team. There are some strong kids.”

Law said the juniors are ready to test their rivals, especially reigning champions New South Wales.

“They’ve been in camp since Wednesday and the nervous energy is building. They’re all really excited.”

“We’ve got some kids who were in our team from last year who have been there and done that and are setting the scene for the young ones coming through and there are some really talented under-14s.”

Law said the under-14 age division would present a surprise because the kids in that age group had not raced at interstate level before.
