Passion for softball takes young player places

IT IS not everyday that a person's hobby takes them all across Australia.

For 17-year-old Jakobie Massey, that is exactly where his passion for softball has landed him.

He has travelled to places in Australia too long to list and played for teams such as Tasmania, Queensland and the Central Queensland side.

Next on the list for Massey is a trip to Sydney's Blacktown International Sportspark for the Softball Australia International Friendship Series.

"It will be good to learn lots of new skills and meet new people," Massey said.

The trip came as a surprise to Massey and his family, with the invitation only coming recently. He had no expectations to travel this year as he completes his schooling.

Only the fact that the tournament is being held over the holidays allowed the time for Massey to make the journey.

"It is just a hobby at the moment, (but) it is good going to different cities and all across Australia for it," he said.

As well as playing, Massey coaches an under-17s side, and is looking to gain knowledge which he can then pass on.

"It is good to play foreign countries. They have a lot of different ways they do things and I can bring that back and implement it into the kids' games."
