Parliament to purchase artwork for Centenary of ANZAC

MACKAY artists who have created works to commemorate the Centenary of ANZAC could have their efforts recognised by the Australian Parliament.

Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen said the Parliament was looking to acquire professional works of art for their significant public art collection.

"The parliament has allocated $200,000 for the purchase of contemporary artworks that pay tribute to the men and women of the Australian Defence Forces for their sacrifice," Mr Christensen said.

"To date, close to $47,000 has been spent, but the Parliament is on the lookout for more works.

"We have many talented artists in the Mackay region and I am sure they would agree that it would be a great honour to have their work displayed in Parliament House.

"Any artists who believe they have a work worthy of consideration can contact my office and I will be happy to put in a proposal for them to the President of the Senate, Senator the Hon Stephen Parry and the Speaker of the House of Representatives the Hon Tony Smith MP."

Works suitable for acquisition need to meet certain criteria.

They need to be by Australian artists or artists who have resided in Australia for significant periods, who have a professional track record.

Works must be:

  • Of an acceptable professional standard
  • In good condition, and require no more than minor conservation;
  • Able to be properly mounted, displayed and conserved; and
  • Of a scale, subject matter and character appropriate to the function of Parliament House.
