Palmer to inspire US in Ryder Cup

GOLF: American Jimmy Walker says Team USA will be moved by the memory of the late Arnold Palmer as it seeks to win the Ryder Cup for the first time since 2008 this week at Hazeltine in Minnesota.

Palmer, who played in six Ryder Cups from 1961-73, winning each time, died earlier this week from heart complications, aged 87.

World No.16 Walker (pictured), who won his first major at this year's PGA Championship, said the Americans would be inspired by the seven-time major champion - including his penchant for pink socks.

"I'm sure he will be looking down on Team USA this week,” he said.

"We've already talked about it as a team.

"We will have a little umbrella logo (representing Palmer's resort and course design firm), wear pink socks, do a few things to show our respect for Palmer.

"He really changed the game for the better, made it much more popular.

"He probably helped grow the game more than any person that's ever played. That's huge. And he made it cool. He was a cool guy, a cool golfer.”

Two-time major winner Bubba Watson has been appointed as one of five vice-captains for the hosts, after being overlooked as a player by US captain Davis Love III.

Love instead opted to go with Rickie Fowler, JB Holmes and Matt Kuchar as his wildcard picks, before adding rookie Ryan Moore earlier this week.

Moore won the John Deere Classic in August and made the Tour Championship playoff last weekend before losing out to Rory McIlroy.

"It was a tough decision,” Love said of his final pick.

"Bubba's obviously disappointed not to be on the team.

"We waited until the last minute to catch a hot player, and Ryan week after week after week after week was the hottest player.”
