Pet carers frustrated by number of cats being dumped

CATS continue to be dumped across the Gladstone region.

Friends of RSPCA Gladstone joint cat co-ordinators Betty Bridge and Anita Coad are picking up the undernourished and neglected animals.

One-year-old domestic medium hair cat Macy was found with a litter of six kittens.

It is believed she was dumped before giving birth to the litter.

"The thing is by dumping cats we are producing more feral cats and just abandoning cats to the wild," Betty said.

"Feral cats are made by irresponsible pet owners."

There have been three separate occasions recently involving a mum and a litter of kittens being dumped.

"We live in an area where there are lots of transient people and when they go they don't take their animals with them," Anita said.

Up until November last year, the pair was looking for kittens to put up for adoption, which is a far cry from the dire situation of the early kitten season this year.

"This year we haven't had a cold winter," Betty said.

"The warmer weather brings the cats into season, which means if they aren't desexed we could get up to two litters out of every female if they're having an early litter.

"If you are considering buying a pet, don't purchase from backyard breeders, come to the RSPCA, because all of our cats and kittens are desexed, microchipped, registered with the council, wormed and vaccinated."

A Cat Adoption Day will be held on Sunday at 17 Pams Crt, Beecher, from 10am-2pm.

Cats for $150 and kittens for $180 will be up for grabs, while there will be deals for people buying more than one cat.

Cat adoptions can also be made via appointment.
