AMERICA'S Gary Allan will headline this year's CMC Rocks North Queensland country music festival.

The one-day festival, to be held in Townsville on September 27, is the first time Allan will be in Australia since playing the first-ever CMC Rocks The Snowy Mountains in 2008.

Joining Allan on the bill, announced this morning, are American rockers The Mavericks and Blackjack Billy, the most talked about new band from March's CMC Rocks The Hunter festival.

"Gary is my favourite country music artist personally. I'm very excited to have him back again," festival co-founder Rob Potts told APN.

"We've been trying to get him to come back since 2010.

"A lot of the newer country artists call themselves outlaw artists but they're really not. Gary's the real deal and a colourful character to boot."

Aussie artists including Morgan Evans, Lee Kernaghan, Kasey Chambers and Troy Cassar-Daley help to round out what Potts is calling a "party" atmosphere.

"The Mavericks were a massive hit at the Gympie Muster last year," he said.

"That's why we're calling it such a party night. The Mavericks will make the place jump and then Gary will certainly bring it home for us."

The annual concert attracts more than 12,000 county music lovers from across the country.

"The biggest part of our audience is within six hours of Townsville, so Mackay and Rockhampton are big markets for us," Potts said.

"But we get people all the way from Brisbane, NSW and the Northern Territory."

Organisers will also introduce a new "time to pay" ticketing system, which has been popular at the CMC Rocks The Hunter event.

"We found it's really popular with our audience," Potts said.

"They spread their payments over three equal payment so they  don't have to stump up with it all at once."

CMC Rocks North Queensland tickets go on sale on Friday at 9am at the CMC Rocks website.
