YOU may not associate Brisbane with a burgeoning art scene, but you'd be mistaken.

Brisbane has some stellar offerings waiting for you to explore. Next time you want to discuss Anamorphosis or Orphism artwork (Yes, we had to google those too) check out the following art galleries in Brisbane.

1. QAGOMA

QAGOMA is a single institution located across two adjacent riverside buildings in South Bank's Cultural Precinct. It holds a collection of more than 16,000 works of historical, modern and contemporary art, and stages a dynamic program of Australian and international exhibitions. The hub is home to the Children's Art Centre which collaborates on interactive artworks with leading artists from around the world, and the Australian Cinémathèque, the only dedicated cinema facility in an Australian art museum. Right now, an incredible Marvel exhibition where the whole family can channel their inner superhero.

2. Jan Murphy Gallery

With more than 20 years in the business, this hotspot is dedicated to the exhibition and sale of contemporary art of the highest calibre and features a varied selection of local and interstate Australian art by both established and emerging artists.

3. FireWorks Gallery

FireWorks Gallery is known for exhibiting some of Australia's favourite contemporary artists. The gallery's exhibition program strives to present artworks by indigenous and non-indigenous artists alongside each other.

4. Artisan

Artisan presents, promotes and celebrates excellence in craftsmanship and design. With everything from furniture to jewellery, this is the place to appreciate cutting-edge design. Artisan's commercial outlet M (ART) is a must for some unique Queensland art.

5. Institute of Modern Art (IMA)

The IMA has been a leading independent space for 40 years. The gallery concentrates on commissioning new works by Australian and international artists at pivotal points in their practices, as well as shedding light on underrepresented artists. Check out its fabulous artist talks.
