Our region ranks highly for campers but can we get them to stay longer?

WE are the second most popular spot for caravanners and campers in Queensland.

Mobile tourists made 10% more visits to the Toowoomba-Warwick region last financial year but the total number of nights stayed dropped 4%.

An ARM Newsdesk analysis of Caravan Industry Association of Australia data shows campers and vanners made 371,161 trips to the Darling Downs in 2015-16 and they spent 916,876 nights here.

With caravanners and campers spending an average $152 a night in the region, local businesses would have collected about $139 million from mobile tourists last financial year.

This was an increase of 10% on 2014-15 figures.

Our region outranked all Queensland tourism areas except the Sunshine Coast in terms of trips made.

Southern Queensland Country Tourism CEO Mary-Clare Power said she was happy to see the number of trips to the region but she was not "overly surprised" by the fall in the number of nights spent here.

"One of the challenges that some regions have is increasing the length of stay," Ms Power said.

"This is something that we keep talking to our partners about.

"We encourage them to create the content that shows the visitors that there is more to do in the region than just stopping on their way through to something else.

Stuart Lamont from the CIAA said vanners and campers were attracted to regions that offered excellent facilities and opportunities to explore.

"Travellers look for outdoor and activity-based experiences as well as the chance to try local produce and dining venues," Mr Lamont said.

"Regions that enjoy great weather and climates are always popular, given the outdoor nature of caravanning and camping, but they also need to be accessible.

"Although active retirees have the time to explore the paths less travelled, families and couples like to access destinations quickly and easily so they enjoy their holiday in the region." - ARM NEWSDESK
