Ouch! After three month wait, dentist pulls wrong tooth

GYMPIE dental patient Sarah Mannion thought three months of throbbing pain in her mouth would go after her tooth was removed at the Gympie Hospital Dental Clinic on Thursday.

But it's hard to remove the pain when you remove the wrong tooth.

Woozy and swollen, it wasn't until three hours after Ms Mannion's appointment that the anaesthetic wore off to reveal a still-aching tooth.

Worse still, there was a hole where a healthy wisdom tooth had been.

"Being a dentist and a professional, I trusted them," the mother-of-one said.

"I didn't think this would happen."

Ms Mannion was x-rayed at the hospital four weeks ago where she learnt her tooth had a large hole and needed removing.

After three months on the waiting list, Ms Mannion attended an appointment on Thursday, where the dentist saw the x-ray and Ms Mannion pointed out the problem tooth.

"She didn't seem that attentive to detail," Ms Mannion said.

"She just seemed like she wanted to get it done and that's it. She didn't seem like she cared."

The situation was exacerbated when Ms Mannion tried to contact the clinic that afternoon.

Instead of talking to Gympie staff directly, the patient's call went through to the Sunshine Coast call centre - the only way appointments are made -usually on the end of a long waiting list.

"They didn't even apologise," she said.

"They just kept saying, but you signed after it."

Ms Mannion was given a new appointment for July 23, almost a month away.

After The Gympie Times made contact with Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service about Ms Mannion's care, Ms Mannion learnt she would have a new appointment on Monday.

Service director Elaine Mawdsley said the Gympie Hospital Dental Clinic takes the matter seriously and is committed to providing a high level of care to all patients.

"While we cannot discuss this patient's care without her consent, I can confirm that we have spoken with her and we are investigating this issue.

"The patient will meet with a senior dentist next week to discuss the matter further."
