Optus upgrade will bring faster speeds

OPTUS phone users will benefit from faster download and internet browsing speeds next year.

The phone company will upgrade its existing phone base station at Clinton to allow fourth generation network coverage across the Gladstone region.

The upgrades will see the introduction of 700MHz 4G, which provides improved indoor coverage.

"This is great news for our customers with compatible 4G mobile phones and tablets," an Optus spokesperson said.

"They will be able to enjoy a faster and more reliable mobile internet experience and can download, upload and stream music, pictures and videos at super fast speeds."

Clinton Takeaway manager Katrina Baldwin said he had little to no phone mobile coverage.

"If you walk outside it gets better. It annoys people because we get a lot of customers who come in and they have to walk back outside to use their phones."

What is it?

  • 4G is high-speed mobile internet
  • Downloading a 10MB song takes 18 seconds with 3G and five seconds with 4G
  • Loading a webpage with 3G is 2.8 seconds and with 4G is 1.5 seconds
  • It takes 55 minutes to download a movie with 3G and 14 minutes with 4G
