OPINION: Eight weeks school holiday is far too long

COMMENT BY KATHY SUNDSTROM: AM I the only person who thinks we should reduce the number of school holidays school children get and give them less homework.

I love my kids, but even they are going slightly bonkers after eight weeks at home.

Yes, they need a break and so do the school teachers - but eight weeks?

All up they have about 15 weeks of holiday a year and unless they are old enough to get a job, there is only so much stressed parents can do to entertain them in that time.

What makes it work is I know from next week Tuesday it is going to be full steam ahead as we try and juggle a seven hour school day, sport commitments and then homework on top.

My eldest is going to Year 8 and I've been told to expect two  hours of homework a day.

I would far rather they spent more time at school to do their work than having to fit it into already busy afternoon schedules.

It's hard to overlook Finland's example of an education system and compare it to Australia.

There they don't start school till they are 7 and they rarely, if ever, have homework - and then it is only in the higher grades.

Pumping our kids with some much work in the school term results in one of two things - they get burnt out or they don't do sport.

It's time to restore some kind of balance.

And can we do it before Tuesday please?
