A NEW report reveals more than half of us are feeling vacation deprived with the average Australian worker having five days of annual leave owing each year.

According to the report, 92% of those surveyed agree regular holidays are important to their general health and wellbeing, with 87% saying it was important to the health of their relationship with their significant other.

Expedia's annual global vacation deprivation report to be released today reveals nearly half of those surveyed say taking a holiday rates as the thing that makes them happiest.

More than a third would take a pay cut for an extra vacation, while 85% believe regular travel helps them feel better connected with friends and family.

Expedia managing director Georg Ruebensal said it was up to Aussie workers to take ownership of their annual leave to ultimately live a happier, well balanced lifestyle.

"Expedia data shows Australians are becoming more conscious of the benefits of taking a holiday, with the number of short breaks up 41%, growing faster than long stays at 20% in the last two years," Mr Ruebensal said.

"However, our report shows we remain hesitant as a culture when it comes to scheduling time off, falling well behind countries like Germany and Brazil who utilise a majority to all of their entitled leave."
