On the crest of a wave after more glory on Rio seas

OF THE seven gold medals Australian athletes won at the 2010 London Olympics, three came from the sailing, making it our most successful sport.

That trend looks set to continue in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, with Aussie sailors picking up two gold and two silver medals at an Olympic Test regatta off Rio.

London gold medallist Mat Belcher and new partner Will Ryan (pictured) took a 17-point lead into the final day and cruised to victory in the 470 class, despite finishing the last race in ninth place.

Tom Burton also took out the Laser class after his main rival, Englishman Nick Thompson, was unable to start the final race due to injury. The silver medallists were Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen in the 49er class, and Darren Bundock and Nina Curtis in the new Nacra17 division. The crews will now turn their attention to the ISAF world championships off Spain next month.
