ALTHOUGH it's a tradition that fluctuates in popularity, Oakey Debutante Ball committee member Anne Teakle believes it's a tradition that's here to stay.

Her comments come after Oakey, Pittsworth and Cooyar regions celebrated the debut of 16 to 17-year-old girls at debutante balls in May.

"It's always well supported by families," she said.

She said the Oakey event on May 23 was a wonderful night with seven girls presented to Father Thomas Areekhuzy of St Monica's and Reverend Malcolm Twine of St Augustine's in Oakey.

"The girls had a few practices before hand to refine their dancing skills - they did the swing waltz - as well as their walking and curtseying," she said.

She said it was in 1984 that it was decided girls of both Catholic and Lutheran churches would be debuted at a combined ball.

St Stephen's Catholic Debutante Ball committee member Marie Mahoney said the ball in Pittsworth celebrated its 80th anniversary this year on May 15, having started on October 24, 1935, with 28 young women making their debut.

One of the original debutantes Dorothy Sullivan was in attendance, along with original flower girl Mary MacKenzie and the nine young women making their debut.

The Cooyar Debutante Ball was held on May 9 said committee member Rita Barron.

"This is the second one (of recent times)," she said.

"We had one about 18 months ago after a break of about 10 years which was popular so we had another."

She said all nine debutantes had partners and were presented to Father Nigel Sequeira of Kingaroy and Nanango parishes.

Mrs Barron said a Deb of the Year Ball would be held on September 5 for all girls who had made their debut this year.
