Push for slip 'n' slide brings back water park memories

RENEE Aiello has fond memories of sliding down the zigzag slides at the old Gladstone Water Slide Park in the 1990s.

Those memories were reignited on Thursday when news broke that the Gladstone PCYC was hoping to bring a 1000ft long slip 'n' slide to Gladstone.

The slide, which would run down Goondoon St from Yaroon St to the yacht club, would be part of a fundraising event in September.

Ms Aiello came across an image of the old Gladstone Water Slide Park when she was looking for pictures of her great, great grandmother for a family reunion in August.

She said many memories flowed back from her days as a seven-year-old.

"I only remember going there with my relatives from Sydney on New Year's Day," Mrs Aiello said.

"It was very popular and there were always lots of people there."

The water park was at the John Dahl Pool across from the duck ponds. One slide was tunnelled while the other was open.

Ms Aiello said people used to have work functions and Christmas parties at the venue which had a pool connected to the slides, a kid's pool, picnic tables and a kiosk.

Ms Aiello doesn't know when or why the slides were removed.

She says Gladstone is a family orientated city but she would love to see more water-based activities here.

"When I was a kid we had the bowling alley and the skating rink.

"Today, we don't have what we grew up with as kids which is a shame for our kids now."
