It's time for Gladstone to party

IT PARTIES, parades and boasts Dame Edna Beverage – it’s the Gladstone Harbour Festival.

The week-long event sails into town tomorrow.

Sunday’s fun event list includes the Rio Tinto Alcan’s Street Parade, QGC’s Opening Night Celebrations and Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal’s Fireworks Display.

The Rio Tinto Alcan’s Street Parade, which Midday Rotary presents, will start at the Gladstone Showground at 4pm tomorrow.

Gladstone Festivals and Events Association Inc general manager Michelle Stafford said the parade marked the opening of the 49th annual Gladstone Harbour Festival.

“The parade, this year, is themed  Mad  Hatters,”  she said.

Following the parade, disco fever will hit with QGC’s Opening Night Celebrations.

The event will take place at the Marina from 6pm to 10.30pm.

Ms Stafford said the event featured Disco Mania.

“(The) celebrations … will take the crowds back to the era of disco (so) get ready to boogie on down,” she said.

The event also includes the crowning of the new Gladstone Regional Ambassador and Junior Queen Quest entrants.

There will also be the Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal’s Fireworks Display, kicking off about 8.30pm.

Ms Stafford said the fireworks were guaranteed to blow every one away.

“Who doesn’t love fireworks?” she said.

In addition, Bechtel’s Street Entertainment will take place nightly.

The entertainers will feature the gorgeous Dame Edna Beverage and her long-time friend Madge Allsorts.

Dame Edna Beverage cannot wait to mingle with the crowds.

“The (Gladstone) Harbour Festival … (has) quickly climbed to being number one on my social calendar,” she said.

“It’s a week-long celebration full of family fun and free entertainment.”

Ms Allsorts has spent some time in Gladstone and cannot wait to come back.

“I can’t wait for the Rio Tinto Alcan Street Parade and making my (way) through side show ally,” she said.
