Offender in court after stealing bag of lollies from IGA

AN impulsive sugar craving almost cost one Gladstone woman her freedom.

Denia Van Nimwegen appeared in Gladstone Magistrates Court on Tuesday for stealing a pack of Allen's Snakes at the IGA on Toolooa St.

The 35-year-old single woman pleaded guilty to the charge. The incident occurred on August 3.

Police prosecutor Mick O'Rourke noted at the beginning of the case he did not believe she deserved a prison sentence for only stealing a pack of lollies.

The defendant's lawyer, Brad Krebs, put the matter down to impulsiveness and declared it out of character for the born and bred Gladstone woman.

When sentencing Van Nimwegen, Magistrate Mark Morrow took into account her previous criminal history and various medical conditions.

Snatching a bag of snakes landed Van Nimwegen one month imprisonment with immediate parole.
