Flynn MP criticised after attack on welfare recipients
FLYNN MP Ken O'Dowd's seemingly ruthless comments, portraying welfare recipients as selfish bludgers, yesterday landed him in hot water.
Mr O'Dowd yesterday received extensive criticism from the public, and attention from national media, for comments he made at a meeting in Capella on Monday.
"You won't get anyone on the dole coming to these sorts of meetings, because they don't care about the community - they care about themselves and how they can screw the system," he told residents.
The Rockhamptopn organiser for the Queensland Council of Unions Craig Allen believed any community leader who allowed a country to generalise its citizens was not fit to hold any position in public office.
"Why? Because it brings out the dark side of people. A community leader should be all about understanding, tolerance and discipline, so we don't end up with racism spreading."
Mr O'Dowd yesterday clarified his comments saying they were taken in isolation and out of context.
"My comments are entirely directed at only those people claiming welfare payments who could be contributing to the workforce and society, rather than being a strain on the hardworking taxpayers of this country."
