O'Brien sworn in as Qld District Court chief judge

FORMER Rockhampton prosecutor Kerry O'Brien has been sworn in as chief judge of the Queensland District Court.

The legal fraternity gathered at the Brisbane Supreme Court on Friday for the official swearing in ceremony.

Judge O'Brien has taken over the reins from the long-serving Patsy Wolfe who retired earlier this month.

Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie said when Judge O'Brien's appointment was announced earlier this month he was one of the most experienced members of the state's judiciary.

"Judge O'Brien is an esteemed legal mind with extensive judicial and administrative skills and experience," he said.

"His Honour was a Crown Prosecutor in Rockhampton and then Townsville's Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions before being appointed to the District Court in 1989.

"Since then, he has served as Children's' Court president and was appointed Judge Administrator in 2008.

"On behalf of the government, I congratulate him on his appointment to this important role in Queensland's justice system."
