Splash Zone to close over winter months

SPLASH Zone at Gladstone Aquatic Centre will close over winter.

Councillors at Tuesday's general meeting heard Splash Zone was not yielding the revenue needed to recoup electricity costs, with visitor rates lower in the colder months.

Splash Zone will close on May 12 and re-open on September 1.

Parks and Recreation portfolio spokesman Graham McDonald said Splash Zone had experienced a decline in patronage over recent weeks as the weather had cooled, and it was expected these numbers would continue to decrease.

"While it is likely some patrons may use Splash Zone on a fine winter's day, the facility requires an average of 25 patrons per day to make it financially viable, and it is unlikely that this would be the case during late autumn and winter," Cr McDonald said.

"By closing the facility for three months, it will also increase the life expectancy of the equipment and significantly reduce operational costs."
