No room for slip ups for Gladstone Valleys

RUGBY LEAGUE: It is labelled as the game of the round from 6pm at Rockhampton's Victoria Park today.

Such are the significance and ramifications of the Rockhampton Rugby League extended A-grade match between Gladstone Valleys and Rockhampton Brothers according to Valleys coach Shaun Hobson.

Valleys sit in sixth spot on the ladder while Brothers have seven wins and five losses.

A loss for the Valleys can almost spend the end of its finals dream while a win will edge the club closer to the coveted top-five finals group.

"This time of the year is pretty critical and the Rocky Brothers will be up for it,” Hobson said.

"We're on the cusp now and need to pretty much win every game.”

Valleys lost 48-34 to the fourth-placed Emu Park last weekend after levelling scores to 30-all and Hobson hopes the inconsistencies will be a thing of the past as the season draws to its pointy end.

Based on the trend of wins and losses since round eight, Valleys have alternated its wins with losses between rounds nine and last weekend.

If that pattern continues, Valleys should win tonight's clash.

With injuries and player unavailability from week-to-week, Hobson said there have been a number of mainstays in the team.

"Michael White and Chris Riley have been in tremendous form for us and our main man Caleb Van Lawick has played every game,” he said.

Van Lawick has scored three tries as well as slotting through 24 conversions.

Dayn Richards is another who has been in excellent form and has scored almost a try a game.

"Caleb has been a credit to our footy club and is a young fella who plays at number six,” Hobson said.

He is also aware with the way in which the Brothers have the ability to wear down its opponents.

"Brothers are disciplined and they just grind you down,” Hobson said.

In other A-grade games, Gladstone Brothers play Norths Chargers from 3pm tomorrow at Marley Brown Oval and Tannum Seagulls are in Rocky for their game against Fitzroy Gracemere also tomorrow at 3pm.
