Night of thrillers

MOTORSPORT: Eighty-eight drivers and riders took on the Benaraby Dragway one-eighth-mile track in Saturday's Round Two of the Summit Racing Queensland Championship.

It was local rivalry between Super Street drivers Brett Kelly and Craig McVie.

Kelly, in his Falcon Hardtop, pipped McVie on a count-back to receive the winner's trophy.

Benaraby Dragway president Lee Davis said racing in the Super Street bracket was extremely close with multiple drivers achieving three wins.

"Many of those racers went on to achieve personal bests in both speed and time,” Davis said.

"The Supercharged Outlaws put on some spectacular performances that kept the crowds entertained on every pass.

"The winner's trophy ultimately went to Randall Move, driver of the world's fastest FJ.”

Gladstone veterans Tom Parry and Laurie Bonito were first and second respectively in the Super Gas class.

"Super Gas is an indexed class, meaning a time is set and the racers have to run close to that without running quicker than it,” Davis explained.

He described that there were also good times in the Junior Dragster category with Benaraby racer Harry Thwaite the winner.

Davis joined the winner's list in the Street class.

"It is the cheapest way into drag racing with many using the 'run what you brung' motto,” Davis said.

"This field boasts wide diversification with some cars still being street registered and what the owners daily drive.

"All drivers were heard to have enjoyed the day immensely and all are looking forward to the final round in Roma's Ironbark Dragway on November 4.”

All three events are run over the eighth-mile using the Chicago Shootout format and round one was held at the Palmyra Dragway back on July 1-2.
