Nicol ready to prove a point
IT will be a ring-a-ding night at the PCYC fight night coming up in a few weeks, as boxers from near and far bring the biff to town.
PCYC boxing trainer Russell Thomas expects about 20 fights on the card in what promises to be an excellent night of boxing and entertainment.
Boxers are coming from as far north as Townsville and south from the Gold Coast to take part in the night.
Four of the PCYC's main prospects will take to the ring in front of a home crowd.
Sam Nicol fights in the 68kg division and will be the main bout of the evening.
Thomas said Nicol was getting stronger and would be out to show the loss in Emerald against Kuang Kutah was a hiccup.
Nicol is off to Caloundra this weekend as part of his lead-up to the fight night.
Adam Keough, Matt Douglas and Corey Hicks are the other three PCYC boxers looking for glory on the night.
“Keough's pretty dedicated, and is a good boxer more so than a fighter,” Thomas said.
“Matt's a pretty hard hitter and doesn't have any respect for his body.
“Nothing gets between him and where he wants to get.”
For 19-year-old Hicks, who fights around 82kg, this will be his second fight, and his trainer is expecting nothing less than victory.
Thomas said yesterday he hoped all the fights would be pre-determined.
“It'd be great to see locals get down and support the boys,” he said.
“Boxing's pretty popular in town and we've had some good talent come through over the years, and this is continuing.”
Ex NRL players Jason Hetherington and Mark Graham will be special guests on the evening and will be on hand to present trophies.
There'll be scorecard girls, licensed bar and food available.
Doors open at 5.30pm and the first fight is scheduled for 6.30pm. Tickets are $12 for adults, and pensioners are $6.
