Nicholls blasts Ray Hopper as 'a rat in the ranks'

THE LNP has used the final sitting week of Parliament to attack deserter Ray Hopper, as pressure mounts on Brisbane LNP member Carl Judge to reveal his political allegiances.

Hopper jumped ship from the LNP on the weekend, declaring that he could better represent his Condamine seat as a part of Katter's Australian Party.

When the Government moved to alter the make-up of its committees, after Mr Hopper's departure, Treasurer Tim Nicholls took the opportunity to blast Mr Hopper for his defection.

"There was a rat in the ranks and the rat left," Mr Nicholls said.

"There is a reason why in Dante's Inferno, the ninth circle of hell was reserved for traitor."

Mr Nicholls went on to tell Mr Hopper that "when you lay down with dogs, you get up with fleas".

Member for Nicklin Peter Wellington put a motion that "the member no longer be heard".

The plan failed after division.

Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney then happily used the same tactic against Mr Wellington when the Sunshine Coast member tried to speak, again bogging down discussion.

It was at this point that the wavering LNP member for Yeerongpilly Carl Judge in Brisbane failed to back the government.

The move fed into speculation that Mr Judge was preparing to jettison the party.

He also arrived to Parliament to find a changed seating order, moving him from within a throng of LNP members and closer to the Labor Party's team.

On Monday, Mr Judge was asked not to return to the conservative party room until he would give strong and public assurances that he would remain with the LNP.

Mr Judge reportedly told journalists he did not feel that he was being disloyal to the LNP in any way.
