New store whips up big rush of smoothie action
STAFF at new protein shake concept store Nutrition Station would have certainly been in need of one of their recovery shakes at the end of last Saturday.
Workers at the Riverlink shopping centre-based business were rushed of their feet all day as crowds gathered for its official launch event.
From 9am to 5pm, a whir of blenders transformed organic fruits, superfoods, protein and other ingredients into sippable smoothie potions for thirsty customers.
Among the patrons was rugby league legend and former Broncos star Scott Prince, who stopped by to support the new store.
"With the obesity problems we have in Australia, more and more people are getting into fitness training," he said.
"Not only is it important to train hard, but also to recover properly.
"And a big part of recovery is to get plenty of nutrients and protein... to now have them available in flavoured shakes, yoghurt and pancakes is perfect."
Items on the Nutrition Station menu were developed by internationally recognized dietary nutritionist Moodi Dennaoui, who was also present at the launch.
Mr Dennaoui, whose clients include athletes like Anthony Mundine and Sonny Bill Williams said Nutrition Station helped educate customers on how to combine their foods well.
"Some good foods are a disaster when put together, while other good foods can compliment one another and work synergistically together," he said.
Mr Dennaoui said stores like Nutrition Station also taught people to count nutrients rather than calories.
"Not all calories are created equal, just because something is low in sugar and fat, it doesn't necessarily mean it's good for you," he said.
"And if something has fat and is slightly moderate in carbohydrates, it doesn't mean it's bad for you.
"It's about the quality of the nutrients and the combinations you put together."
Nutrition Station Ipswich co-owner Jacinda Chisholm said she was pleased with the great reception from the community.
"We wanted this event to have a nice, community feel," she said.
"The aim for our store is to be a place where people can come and be supported in their fitness goals and see how fun being healthy can be. Since we opened in December, word of mouth has spread and business has been getting bigger each week."
As well as the celebrity appearances, the day included fitness competitions, a cake cutting ceremony and free samples.
