New playgroup dedicated to teen mums
STARTING soon teenage mums will have a dedicated space and time to come together for playgroup at the Women's Health Centre in Gladstone.
The "Baby Steps" program will be run by a group of volunteers who will help teenage mums work through any parenting issues they may have in a friendly and open setting.
The manager of the Women's Health Centre, Tash Fee, said she was hoping to create a playgroup which would help break down the walls for young mums in need of help.
"We want to fill the current gap in the community and allow teenage mums and their bubs to find a playgroup that suits them where they don't feel isolated or like they're being judged," she said.
"There's a lot of pressure on a mum who's 13 years old and feels like she is being judged by older mums on their parenting.
"We had one quite young mum who said she couldn't relate to the older mums and felt like she was being judged so she didn't want to come back to the playgroup," she said.
Ms Fee hopes the playgroup will work as a soft entry point for teen mums to get counselling and find out about support programs that will help them and their bubs develop healthily.
The playgroup will start Wednesday 3 February at 10am.
