Three Tannum surf life savers to compete at state titles

A SMALL tight-knit club, Tannum Sands Surf Life Saving Club has for years been without a huge representation at the state level.

That analogy is changing though, and with it the old beliefs about where a small club's members spring from.

Sending three young up-and-coming athletes to North Kirra this weekend for the Queensland Surf Sport titles, the club has one of their members coming from Tasmania, one from Gladstone and one from the Tannum Sands area itself.

Ryan Beecroft, Hayden Lester and Georgia Grosskreutz have all been to states before, and are all once again preparing to converge and attack a successful carnival, while also having a reunion of sorts, including Ryan and Hayden in the Open Board Rescue.

"That will be a lot of fun really, to do it with Ryan," Hayden said.

Currently studying a Bachelor of Ocean Engineering in Launceston, Ryan has continued as a member of the Tannum Sands club even now as he enters his third year of university.

He also enters the open age group for the first time, and being separated from Queensland means his goals are hard to set.

"My pet events are ski and ironman, it would be great to make the finals in both events," Ryan said.

Hayden and Georgia on the other hand have been in the state training hard, and are still unsure of just how they will perform when they hit the sand at North Kirra.

"I am trying to get a medal, and trying to make the final of the ironwoman, flags board and a top five for 2km run," Georgia said.

State Title Events

  • Ryan Beecroft (Open)- Ironman, Board, Ski, Swim, Board Rescue
  • Hayden Lester (U19)- Swim, Board, Ski, Ironman, Board Rescue (Open)
  • Georgia Grosskreutz (U17)- Board, Swim, Sprint, Flags, Ironwoman, 2km run
