New lease of life for RSL
THE RSL could be heading for a new home in Gladstone.
Gladstone Regional Council yesterday voted in favour of a proposal that will likely see Gladstone RSL Sub Branch granted a lease on property in Moura Cres.
Gladstone Martial Arts Academy has also been given the green light to lease land at Moura Cres.
The two groups would be on the sites near the location of the Gladstone Boxing Club.
The RSL branch said it would not comment on council's decision until it had spoken to its committee and state representatives.
The branch is looking for a new home because its current base on Flinders Pde will eventually be demolished to create a foreshore development on Auckland Creek.
Councillor Graham McDonald said the land on Moura Cres could be an ideal solution for the branch.
"The Gladstone RSL Sub-Branch is keen to find a permanent home, as the building they loan from the Gladstone Ports Corporation at the harbour end of Flinders Pde is due for demolition to make way for the waterfront redevelopment," Cr McDonald said.
"The Gladstone Martial Arts Academy, meanwhile, has indicated it is keen to build a home to store equipment and have the freedom to manage their organisation without rental constraints.
"These organisations would complement those already in existence or planned along that strip of Barney Point land."
The marshal arts club has been looking for a new home for months and will be relieved to see some movement.
