New club combines CrossFit and weightlifting

ONCE a hurdler, Tia Toomey now trains intensely for CrossFit and weightlifting.

Having been to the CrossFit Regional Games in Wollongong and nearly qualifying for the Commonwealth Games in weightlifting, Toomey is determined to combine the two and open up weightlifting to all of Gladstone.

Her project begins this weekend with the official launch of the CrossFit Gladstone Weightlifting Club on Saturday and Sunday.

The launch begins with a weightlifting competition with input from Commonwealth Games lifters and top weightlifting coaches.

"The weigh-in starts Saturday at 2pm and competition starts at 3pm," Toomey said.

The launch continues across the weekend with 90 minute sessions for prospective lifters.

Having worked on the idea for three months, Toomey is keen to see the concept be a big hit.

"Come down," she said. "It is free. There is a barbecue and ASN has a stall," she said.

"We have about 28 lifters, males and females."

Classes for weightlifting at CrossFit Gladstone begin on Monday, June 23.

They will be running every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and start at 6.30pm.
