New brew to help save Great Barrier Reef

THOSE who love a good beer can now also raise their glass to a good cause thanks to a brewing campaign to help conserve the Great Barrier Reef.

Founder of Brisbane-based company The Good Beer Co., James Grugeon has teamed up with Bargara Brewing Company to produce a fruity flavoured craft beer called Great Barrier Beer, with 50% of sale profits going towards the Australian Marine Conservation Society.

"I started looking for a brewery partner for Australia's first social enterprise beer about six months ago," he said.

"I met owner of Bargara Brewing Company, Jack. He was really keen on the idea. Bargara Brewing Company is a brewery that cares about environmental responsibility and Jack and the guys are also very passionate about the protection of the Great Barrier Reef."

Plans are now underway to produce Great Barrier Beer, with Bargara Brewing Company's head brewer Andrew Clark creating the recipe and brewing from The Brewhouse on Tantitha St.
Co-owner Jack Milbank said the beer would be an easy-drinking, mid-strength craft beer full of fruity flavours.

"It will be a 3.5% alcohol strength and we will try to get as much tropical, fruit flavours in there as possible including some lychee notes, so it is in keeping with what represents the reef and summer.," he said.

"It will also be brewed environmentally responsibly."

Mr Grugeon said the beer would fund the work of the Australian Marine Conservation Society that has been protecting the reef.

He said Great Barrier Beer would be available in kegs and bottles around Australia, and at The Brewhouse, from mid February.

"We already have many pre-orders for the beer as part of a CrowdFund campaign that we ran.
We are going to be placing an order of between $40,000 to $50,000 dollars for Great Barrier Beer," he said.

"It is a really simple concept, we brew good beer that does good."
