NAPLAN: Qld wins 'most improved' prize

QUEENSLAND'S NAPLAN results are the most improved, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced on Wednesday.

She said the results released revealed the Smart State was the most improved in seven years.

Ms Palaszczuk chalked up the positive marks to the state's introduction of an early prep year and decision to move Year 7 from primary to high school.

She spoke of her dream for a future where all students learnt an Asian language along with stem, coding and robotics.

Ms Palaszczuk said in 20 years' time, Queensland would be vastly different.

She made the NAPLAN announcement at the Queensland Futures Summit, where she revealed the government would provide $28.5 million to support emerging research leaders over the next three years.

The Advance Queensland Research Fellowships includes $180,000 funding for early-career fellowships and $300,000 for mid-career fellowships.

"The Research Fellowships program is a key component of Advance Queensland's Best and Brightest Fund that will help develop, attract and retain world-class talent - both scientific and entrepreneurial," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"Through these new Advance Queensland fellowships, we will regain some of the momentum we lost in research and innovation in recent years by investing in our top talent to keep the bright ideas, innovators and entrepreneurs in Queensland to benefit our economy.

"They will allow us to develop our smartest minds here at home, as well as to continue to attract the best from overseas."

Applications for the funding are now open.

She said after her trade delegation to the US, she was able to meet with companies who would now partner with Queensland researchers.

Ms Palaszczuk said later on this year she would lead a trade delegation to China and Japan to discuss investment opportunities in Queensland.
