Gladstone fish postcard gets the laughs... and offends

A POSTCARD feature a three-eyed Dory is making half of Gladstone laugh, and offending the rest.

The polarising postcard, designed by budding cartoonist and card maker Brenda Courtice, is stocked online on Etsy - having sold just shy of 20 in a matter of weeks.

The real challenge, however, is finding a local retailer with enough of a sense of humour to stock it on shelves.

"I'm often writing down silly thoughts that come to me that could potentially turn into a cartoon or a card, so the Gladstone one just birthed from some of the hearsay around the harbour," Brenda said.

"A business that was stocking my cards during the Christmas season said they were interested in stocking a Gladstone postcard.

"I designed it more just for a bit of a laugh and showed my husband and my family.

"I did go back to the business who was stocking my cards and they had a good laugh, but said it wasn't something they could really stock as it can be taken as quite controversial."

Brenda, the creative brain behind Red Echnidna Designs, says she knew from the outset she would have difficulty finding a stockist for the postcard, and she was right.

After taking distribution into her own hands, the market has proven the postcard to be a success - selling an average of one every two days.

"I was pretty pleased with that" she said.

"I have grown to love Gladstone so my postcard wasn't meant to be a dig at Gladstone as a town, but more of a tongue in cheek cartoon."

Brenda began designing cards and creating cartoons way back when she was in grade four.

Her latest creation poking fun at her home has attracted by far the most attention, however, attracting mixed responses.

"Even with the best intentions someone will often misinterpret what you mean," she said.

"Most people could see the funny side, although there were some very vocal people who felt I was deliberately trying to tear down the region, which was not in any way my intention."
