Muslim chaplain protests 'weapon' ruling on flight

A MUSLIM chaplain has garnered an outpouring of social media support following her claims of racist behaviour by air crew members on a US domestic flight.

Tahera Ahmad, whose job title on Facebook is an interfaith engagement director and associate chaplain at Northwestern University, said in a post on May 29 that a crew member refused to give her an unopened can of diet coke because she could use it as a weapon.

"She brought me a can that was open so I requested an unopened can due to hygienic reasons," Ms Ahmad said in her post.

"She responded, 'well I'm sorry, I just can't give you an unopened can so no diet coke for you'."

Ms Ahmad, who was on a flight from Chicago to Washington, said the crew member then brought the man sitting next to her a can of unopened beer.

"So I asked her again why she refused to give me an unopened can of diet coke," the post said.

"She said, 'we are unauthorized to give unopened cans to people because they may use it as a weapon on the plane'."

The chaplain said she was in tears of humiliation following the interaction.

The hashtag #unitedfortahera has since gained traction on social media and support for the chaplain.

@RaefMusic wrote: "I logged over 130,000 miles with @United - will take my biz elsewhere."

However, a backlash under the same hashtag was also evident on Twitter.
