Mum raises money for son's family

A BUNDABERG mother is trying to raise money to help support her son's family while he battles cancer.

Kelly Ball's son Justin Colquhoun was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in January 2014.

He had three separate operations, but then found a lump under his lower lip in August 2014.

More surgery found it was a cancerous tumour, and after another bout of surgery he had six weeks of radiation, working as a backhoe operator to support his family the whole time.

A follow up scan in January this year gave him the all clear but in April he found another lump on his jawbone.

A biopsy was performed on June 3, and the results showed an aggressive cancer growing on his jawbone.

Ms Ball said her son had the whole of his jawbone on the left side removed during 13 hours of surgery.

Bone and cartilage was removed from his leg to rebuild his jawbone.

"Last week he started radiation treatment again," Ms Ball said.

"He also has to have lots of physiotherapy on his leg so he can walk again"

Ms Ball said her son also faced more surgery to put more cartilage in his jaw.

However, the long series of operations Mr Colquhoun has endured means he can no longer work.

So Ms Ball has set out fundraising in a bid to help support his family.

Ms Ball said her son was only 31, had two girls and got married a week before his latest surgery.

She has posted an appeal for donations on the gofundme website with the aim of raising $5000.

She has also placed posters around Bundaberg appealing for donations and charity tins at various locations.

"I don't know how long he can't work for," she said.

Donations can be made at the website
