Mudcrabs juniors put in strong showing at championships
FOUR of Gladstone's Mudcrabs have proven themselves future prospects with strong performances at the North Queensland AFL Under-16 Championships held in late March.
Playing for Capricornia's representative side, the Gladstone products were able to help the team play an inspiring brand of AFL despite mixed results.
Ben Dempsey, 16, the eldest of the Mudcrabs contingent, was good enough to be selected for the North Queensland side, which will attend the Queensland Under-16 State Championships in Brisbane next month.
"Ben played really well and deserved the spot," Capricornia coach Ben Hopkins said.
BITS player Corey Murphy was also selected to represent North Queensland, while Connor Russell led the way in the group who have another year left in the age bracket.
Just turning 15, Russell was given the Whitsundays Bloods Jersey to recognise his performance.
"Connor was lucky enough to receive the jersey; he has performed well for an underage player," Hopkins said.
Jackson Smith and Huntah Gumz, both 14, were the Mudcrabs' other representatives.
