Gladstone Mudcrabs began its 2016 redemption with a comprehensive 53-point win against BITS Saints in round one of AFL Capricornia.

A quick centre clearance resulted in the game's first goal courtesy of Zac Jahn within the first 30 seconds of the BITS Oval match.

Jahn booted three goals in the 12.16 (88) to BITS 5.5 (35) win and it was the Muddies' first victory against the arch enemy since 2012.

Tasmanian recruit Mark Jensen did what he pleased off half back in a quarter-back-type role while Josh Brown was close to best afield in a classy performance.

It included a brilliant solo effort where Brown burst through centre half forward to boot an inspiring goal.

Drizzle made the game a scrap in the middle quarters during which the hosts brought the margin back to 14 points after a brace of goals to Daniel Shipard (four goals).

"It was a hard-fought contest at the start and we were pressing them in their back half," Brown said.

"In the end it was our fitness that got us on top."

Brown, 19, played in the under 18 TAC competition and aimed to get into the AFL draft on the back of a standout performance against Gippsland Power.

The demands of AFL in the southern states prompted the midfielder to head back to Gladstone to 'enjoy' his football.

"I just wanted to get back and work on my craft and we'll see what happens later on," Brown said.

The scoreboard would have been much uglier had it not been for the effort and smarts by veteran Shipard with his four goals.

"Look, we're a rebuilding side and the emphasis this year is to give the younger lads a chance," the pony-tailed Shipard said.

"It was a slow start from us, but we hung in there.

"Muddies' fitness was too good in the end."
