MP repays travel claim for flights to his own wedding
A LIBERAL MP who charged the taxpayer for the cost of flights to his own wedding says the claim was made in error.
The Federal Member for the Western Australian seat of Swan, Steve Irons, repaid the $2000 claim after what he described as a "self-audit."
The Western Australian reports travel records reveal Irons billed taxpayers $1346 to fly from Perth to Melbourne on Tuesday October 18, 2011.
This was followed by another charge of $911.80 on October 25.
He married his wife Cheryle on October 21.
"These flights were identified during a self-audit and brought to the attention of the Department of Finance," a spokeswoman for Mr Irons said.
"Voluntary repayment was then arranged."
Earlier this month the Western Australian's weekend publication revealed Irons claimed the cost of flights from Brisbane to Perth to attend a golf tournament on the Gold Coast.
He defended that spend saying his role at the tournament meant it was electorate business.
