INDEPENDENT State MP Liz Cunningham has vehemently denied speculation that she intends to resign, forcing a by-election.

A Brisbane media outlet on Monday reported they believed Ms Cunningham may look to step down from the role in early 2014, which would lead to a by-election being called in her Gladstone electorate.

She said there was no truth to the rumour she was looking at stepping away from politics.

"There's nothing to it. I take very seriously calling a by-election," she said.

"I can understand it for ill health or family emergencies, that's fine, but pulling the pin for no reason is not."
