MP didn't declare $1.4m home, but not a big deal says PM

PRIME Minister Malcolm Turnbull and other Coalition MPs have jumped to the defence of cabinet minister Michaelia Cash following her failure to declare an investment property on time.

The Prime Minister said he was disappointed Senator Cash was late in registering an investment property in Perth bought late last year, reportedly for $1.4 million.

The property was not added to Senator Cash's register of interests until January 21 while the mortgage was not declared until February.

"She's had an oversight here. She's very sorry about it and I've accepted her apology," Mr Turnbull told Melbourne's 3AW radio.

According to the rules, any senator who "knowingly fails to notify any alteration" of their registrar within 35 days of the change occurring "shall be guilty of serious contempt of the Senate".

Minister for Environment and Energy Josh Frydenberg told Melbourne radio station 3AW he thought the incident was "very minor", saying there were bigger issues to tackle.

"We're all conscious of our obligations and I think in scheme of things this is very minor," he said.

"It's been corrected, there's nothing to hide here and we just need to get on with the job of governing for all Australians."
