MOVIE REVIEW: Storks delivers family fun

SINCE surprising everyone with the runaway success The Lego Movie, Warner Bros has made it clear it intends to join the other animation alphas Disney and Dreamworks in the battle for box office supremacy.

The company's new release Storks shows that they are bringing plenty of talented storytellers with them.

The Nick Stoller-penned story is a seemingly simple one: storks deliver babies, right? Well they used to. Now the birds deliver packages for Cornerstore.com.

The real adventure begins when Tulip (the orphan girl whose failed delivery led to the Storks abandoning the baby business in the first place) and the hard-working stork Junior accidentally turn the baby factory on one last time. The two set off on a journey to discretely deliver the newborn to her true family.

I'm sure you can already tell that this supposedly simple story goes out of control and honestly, a little bit over the top pretty quickly. It moves at a frantic pace and the unpredictable humour at times leads the movie into slapstick territory.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing, however, as this unique method of storytelling makes up for the film's more familiar elements.

We learn the same things about family that we've learned from countless other movies but that doesn't mean there isn't a lot of heart here.

Storks can be hit or miss but when it hits, it hits hard. The funny jokes are really funny; the sweet moments are really heartfelt.

Even if Storks isn't the most original movie it still finds plenty of ways to be unique, and maybe that's why I found it to be one of the most enjoyable films I've seen for a long time.

It's too bizarre to satisfy everyone but thankfully, Storks has enough personality to overcome its flaws.
