Movie review: Monte Carlo

GOSSIP Girl meets Cinderella in this sugary sweet teen film.

There's some love, some squabbling and a small case of theft and mistaken identity all explored in a very Disney-esq style.

The film's Cinderella is Grace, played by Selena Gomez, the girl who was responsible for breaking teen girl's hearts when she dated Justin Bieber.

Here she's an 18-year-old high school graduate from Texas who is finally fulfilling her dreams of a trip to Paris with her best friend.

But there's a catch, her stepfather insists her snotty step-sister Meg (Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester) goes with them.

After a disastrous few days, a case of mistaken identity lands the girls living in the life of a wealthy and snobby, socialite complete with designer ball gowns, Louis Vuitton luggage and a five-star hotel.

Cue plenty of fish-out-of-water style scenes and some light romance.

Director Thomas Bezucha migrated to movies from the fashion industry and so beautiful gowns, stunning jewellery and sparkly shoes play a central role in this teen flick.

Being a rom-com there is plenty of boy-meets-girl action, but all three of the girl's flirtations and subsequent relationships are so innocent and sugary sweet it's hard to tell if it's a breath of fresh air or a health hazard.

A peppy and perky ride that will have tween audiences squealing in delight but ultimately it's the film equivalent of a cupcake - pretty, sugary, sweet but lacking substance.
